Digital Desk: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has imposed an Orange alert for Sunday (April 10) in Delhi because of the severe heatwave expectancy.
According to the IMD, the temperature in Delhi reached 42.4 degrees Celsius on Saturday (April 9), making it the warmest day in five years.
Earlier, on April 21, 2017, the national capital recorded a maximum temperature of 43.2 degrees Celsius. The highest maximum temperature for the month was 45.6 degrees Celsius on April 29, 1941.
IMD stated that this is the first time in 72 years that Delhi has experienced such intense heat in the first half of April.
For weather warnings, IMD implements four colour codes: green (no action required), yellow (watch and keep informed), orange (be prepared), and red (take action).
A 'heatwave' is declared in the plains when the maximum temperature exceeds 40 degrees Celsius and is at least 4.5 notches above normal.
According to the IMD, a severe heatwave' is declared when the temperature deviates from normal by more than 6.4 degrees Celsius.
