Maharashtra becomes first Indian state to buy land in Kashmir worth ₹8.16 crore

The Jammu and Kashmir government has approved the land transfer to Maharashtra for a sum of ₹8.16 crore.

Digital Desk: Maharashtra is poised to make history as the first Indian state to purchase land in Jammu and Kashmir, aiming to build a tourist facility in Budgam. The proposed Maharashtra Bhawan in central Kashmir's Budgam marks a considerable milestone, representing the state's effort to provide accommodation for its citizens visiting the valley.

As reported by The Indian Express, the Maharashtra Bhawan is to occupy 2.5 acres of land near Srinagar airport at Ichgam. The Jammu and Kashmir government has approved the land transfer to Maharashtra for a sum of ₹8.16 crore. This initiative came from Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's visit to the union territory last June, where he met Governor Manoj Sinha.

In a recent budget announcement, Maharashtra's Deputy CM Ajit Pawar disclosed plans to construct two Maharashtra Bhawans in Srinagar and Ayodhya, emphasizing the government's commitment to enhancing tourist and devotee facilities. A substantial allocation of ₹77 crore has been earmarked for this endeavour.

Before the abrogation of Article 370, only permanent residents of Jammu and Kashmir could purchase land, while others could lease it for up to 99 years. However, the changed landscape has opened avenues for states like Maharashtra to invest in development projects in the region.
