Opposition Leaders Unite Against Government's Actions at 'Loktantra Bachao' Rally

Digital Desk: Delhi's historic Ramlila Maidan witnessed a gathering as leaders of the opposition INDIA bloc convened for their 'Loktantra Bachao' rally, aimed at safeguarding democracy. The event, organised by the Congress and supported by various parties, including the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), highlighted concerns over what they perceive as authoritarian actions by the ruling government.

The rally, which began at 11 am, saw the arrival of prominent opposition figures, including Mehbooba Mufti and Sharad Pawar, amidst heightened security measures. The AAP, a key member of the alliance, emphasised the arrest of its national convenor and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the excise policy case as a focal point of the protest.

However, the Congress, the largest constituent of the alliance, underscored that the rally is not merely about individual cases but a broader condemnation of what they term the 'dictatorship' of the BJP-led central government. Leaders from different parties echoed similar sentiments, criticising the alleged misuse of central agencies like the ED, CBI, and IT department.

AAP's spokesperson, Adil Khan, denounced Kejriwal's arrest as illegal and highlighted his contributions to Delhi's development, particularly in education, healthcare, and women's safety.

Others, including CPI(M)'s Brinda Karat and SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, accused the BJP of resorting to authoritarian tactics and facing global criticism for its actions.

The rally, marked by slogans and speeches, also witnessed a 'blindfold' protest organized by Congress workers.

As the event unfolded, Delhi Police imposed Section 144, restricting large gatherings, and issued a traffic advisory to manage the influx of attendees. Despite these measures, the enthusiasm among supporters remained undeterred, with the venue already filled by early morning.

“Security has been tightened outside Ramlila Maidan. According to the Delhi Police, ‘elaborate’ security arrangements have been made at each gate, and paramilitary personnel have been deployed in and around the venue.” Hindustan Times reports.
