Digital Desk: Delhi students held a protest outside Congress headquarters against wealth redistribution and inheritance tax. Over 700 students took to the streets to voice their dissent against the Congress party's election manifesto, particularly its pledge for equal wealth distribution. Brandishing placards reading 'Urban Naxals,' undergraduates and postgraduates from various colleges marched towards the Congress headquarters to express their opposition.
News agency PTI says, ”A group of students held protest outside Congress headquarters in Delhi against the party's alleged idea of wealth and inheritance tax.”
Student Shruti said, as quoted by Times Algebra, "Girls get wealth during marriage, why will they distribute it?"
Expressing their concerns, a student from Galgotias University asserted, "We stand against Congress' plan to exploit our resources, halve our earnings, and raise taxes. They seek to intrude into our homes, and we refuse to allow that."
Emphasising that their protests transcend political affiliations, participants underscored the potential adverse effects of the proposed wealth redistribution scheme on ordinary citizens. "Our demonstrations are apolitical; we are students aspiring for the nation's welfare. It's imperative for the youth to raise their voices against the Congress' manifesto," remarked one protester.
Another student protester criticised Congress, alleging a legacy of detrimental policies spanning seven decades. Expressing apprehension about the nation's future under Congress governance, they warned of a potential civil unrest akin to a "civil war" and accused Congress of indulging in appeasement politics.
With more than 700 youths joining the protest, concerns were raised over Congress's focus on minority appeasement at the expense of majority interests. Echoing sentiments raised by PM Narendra Modi regarding former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's speeches, protesters questioned Congress' priorities.
Addressing the issue of wealth redistribution, a protester named Prince questioned the feasibility of sharing middle-class wealth accumulated over generations. "Why redistribute the hard-earned wealth of the middle class? If redistribution were aimed at the affluent, it might have been more understandable," he asserted, as quoted by the Republic.
PM Modi reiterated on Tuesday that Congress will definitely impose a 55% inheritance tax if voted to power. Congress intends to collect more than half—55 percent—as a tax on inheritance (acquired from parents)," he stated. The Prime Minister's claims originate from a statement made by Indian Overseas Congress chairman Sam Pitroda, who dubbed inheritance tax, implemented in several states in the United States, an "interesting idea."
