Digital Desk: Pawan Singh declined to contest the election amid backlashes on his selection for West Bengal’s Arshashol. The BJP announced his name as their candidate for Arsanshol on Saturday when it published an initial list comprising more than 195 names.
Pawan Singh has been brutally trolled over his interview, where he was heard saying that he does not have any idea about development and asked the anchor to ask questions related to music and entertainment.
He tweets in Hindi, “I express my heartfelt gratitude to the top leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party. The party trusted me and declared me the candidate from Asansol, but due to some reason I will not be able to contest the elections from Asansol..."
His selection is also questioned as he is from Bihar, and allegedly the West Bengal BJP was unhappy over his selection from Arsanshol.
Singh, a 38-year-old Bihar resident, was selected for the Bengal seat, which caused a major rift. Many have also brought up his discography, citing multiple songs that contain offensive remarks to women from Bengal. The social media backlash was not ignored, and according to sources, the BJP had expected that Mr Singh's candidacy would hurt its chances of winning Asansol.
“The sources stated that he was told when the decision to drop him was made. Next was the tweet from the singer-actor announcing his departure.” NDTV reports.
Abhishek Banerjee, national general secretary of Trinamool, stated shortly after the Bhojpuri actor's post that the withdrawal was due to the unwavering determination of the people of West Bengal. "Even before the khela begins, this is Khela Hobe," joked party head Derek O'Brien.
