CM Conrad Sangma Walks Flooded Ïewduh Market, Announces ₹21 Crore Revamp
Ïewduh, one of the oldest and largest traditional markets in Northeast India

Digital Desk: Conrad K. Sangma visited the famous Ïewduh market in Shillong, also known as Bara Bazar, during the heavy rain to check its progress and remain committed to helping out at the grassroots level. Despite the floods, the Chief Minister walked through the markets and met with the vendors to understand the conditions they face.

Long considered a major traditional market in the region, Ïewduh in Northeast India employs hundreds of vendors who trade fruits and vegetables, meat, fish, spices, food products, clothes, and handicrafts. The bi-monthly event benefits many residents and businessmen from both Meghalaya and the neighboring states.

Calling the visit the best in his political career, CM Sangma also pointed out the difficulties related to the market’s drainage system, which causes inundation each monsoon season. He called for increased priority on drainage, paths for pedestrians, sanitation, and services for traders.
The state government has already authorized ₹6 crore for fixing up the market and plans to add an extra ₹15 crore to fully overhaul it. It includes better drainage, properly arranged markets, covered walkways, improved hygiene, and attractive features for visitors, all while maintaining the old-fashioned character of Ïewduh.

He further expressed the wish for Ïewduh to mirror our local culture and the dreams Meghalaya has for the future. The project is being developed with Southeast Asia’s well-known markets in mind, trying to join the past and future as one.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma was joined by Deputy CM Preston Tynsong, Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh, Hima Mylliem Chief Paiem Ainam Manik Syiem, and local ministers as they worked together for the development of all.
