Meghalaya Government Partners with Digital India to Digitize Garo and Khasi Languages
Chief Minister Sangma expressed pride in this achievement, stating that AI now enables not only digital translation of speech but also meaning

Digital Desk: The Government of Meghalaya executed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Digital India Bhashini Division of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) for implementing Garo and Khasi languages into the BHASHINI platform.

The MoU was signed in the presence of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Minister of Art and Culture Paul Lyngdoh, along with members of the Khasi and A’chik Literature Societies. BHASHINI, a key initiative under the Digital India programme, aims to bridge language barriers by using advanced natural language technologies. Already functional in 22 Indian languages, the addition of Garo and Khasi places Meghalaya among the select states making their indigenous languages digitally accessible

Chief Minister Sangma  expressed gratitude  by stating  that AI has advanced beyond speech translation to offer full meaning capabilities. He described how the initiative can shape all aspects of governance along with education and tourism and healthcare and entrepreneurship. The system will transform how the government interacts with its citizens while simultaneously stimulating both innovative development and job opportunities according to the Chief Minister.

The Chief Secretary D.P. Wahlang leads the State Language Mission which handles both integration work and resource development tasks. The mission task focuses on maintaining cultural characteristics while ensuring adequate digital model representation of native languages.

While, Khasi language has been  recently incorporated  the BHASHINI app development phase for refinement while efforts are underway to establish the Garo language within the platform. The MoU functions to speed up both processes in a way that enriches AI models along with expanding inclusivity efforts.

Technology experts consider this development essential to increase cultural exchanges and tourism growth alongside digital network development. CEO of Digital India Bhashini, Amitabh Nag, and Commissioner Secretary, IT Department, Pravin Bakshi signed the MoU to launch a new digital phase for Meghalaya.
