Digital Desk: In a significant political shift, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal has faced a crushing defeat in his stronghold of Dhubri, losing by over 10 lakh votes in the recent Lok Sabha elections. At a late-night press conference, the three-time MP acknowledged the setback and announced that a thorough analysis would be conducted to understand the reasons behind this unexpected outcome.

Ajmal's defeat in Dhubri is part of a broader electoral loss for the AIUDF, as the party also faced routs in Nagaon and Karimganj. The defeat in Dhubri, where Congress candidate Rakibul Hussain secured a margin of 10,12,476 votes, marked a dramatic shift in voter sentiment. Hussain, a seasoned politician and former minister in Tarun Gogoi's cabinet, received 14,71,885 votes, while Ajmal managed to secure only 4,59,409 votes.

Acknowledging the gravity of the loss, Ajmal emphasized the need for detailed research to understand the shift in voter behavior, particularly since he had previously won the seat three times consecutively. "It is a big blow. It will take some time to analyse what went wrong. We will find out what happened to the people because these same people made me MP for three consecutive terms," Ajmal stated.

Ajmal attributed part of the electoral defeat to a nationwide backlash against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP's policies. He claimed that various contentious issues, including the possible changes to the Constitution, the Babri mosque controversy, and the construction of the Ram temple, had triggered widespread discontent among Muslims, Dalits, and other marginalized communities, leading to a "tsunami" against the BJP.

Despite the setbacks, Ajmal remained optimistic about AIUDF's future, expressing confidence in a resurgence in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. He pointed to the Congress party's recent revival as evidence that political fortunes can change. "We have the 2026 Assembly elections and we will definitely win it. Congress almost vanished after Modi came in 2014, but today the opposition party made a comeback across the country. Around the world, people lose and then they make a comeback," he asserted.

In the other contested seats, AIUDF candidates also fared poorly. In Nagaon, AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam came third with 1,37,340 votes, while Sahabul Islam Choudhury received just 29,205 votes in Karimganj.

Despite these losses, Ajmal's resolve remains firm. He is determined to identify and rectify the party's shortcomings, ensuring a stronger performance in the future.
