Digital Desk: A day before their
tenure in the Rajya Sabha was about to end, Union ministers Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi
and RCP Singh announced their resignations on Wednesday. The Prime Minister,
Narendra Modi, reportedly received resignation letters from the Union
ministers.
According
to a PTI report, earlier in the day during the cabinet meeting, Modi praised
Singh and Naqvi for their contributions to the nation throughout their terms as
ministers, thus implying that it was their last cabinet meeting.
Both
ministers resigned as required by the constitution on Thursday, when their
terms as Rajya Sabha MPs were slated to expire. As of Friday, they would no
longer be members of parliament.
Senior
BJP official Naqvi also serves as the Rajya Sabha's deputy leader. Singh is a
JD(U) quota minister in the Modi Cabinet.
A
BJP spokeswoman refuted accusations that the Nitish Kumar-led Janata Dal
(United) attended the party's national executive meeting in Hyderabad over the
weekend, but according to a report from HT, Singh may join the party in three
to four months.
Singh's
continued appointment as a minister was questioned when the JD(U) failed to
nominate him for the Rajya Sabha in May amid rumours of his potential BJP
defection.
