"I have directed Assam Police to withdraw FIR against Mizoram Rajya Sabha MP K Vanlalvena": CM Sarma

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed Assam Police to withdraw case against Rajya Sabha MP from Mizoram K Vanlalvena as a "goodwill gesture" after the violent clash on July 26th at the Assam-Mizoram border, which led to the death of 6 Assam Police Personnel.

However, he further stated that the government is pursuing cases for the other Police Officers of Mizoram Police.

"I have noted statements in media by Honble Mizoram CM Zoramthanga wherein he has expressed his desire to settle the border dispute amicably. Assam always wants to keep the spirit of North East alive. We are also committed to ensuring peace along our borders," said Himanta Biswa Sarma in a tweet.

"To take this goodwill gesture ahead, I have directed Assam Police to withdraw FIR against K Vanlalvena, Hon'ble MP, Rajya Sabha from Mizoram. However, cases against other accused police officers will be pursued," he added.

Assam Police booked Rajya Sabha MP from Mizoram K Vanlalvena for his remarks on the Assam-Mizoram border dispute.

Quoting the violent incident of July 26th as unfortunate and unacceptable, Assam CM tweeted that border issues can be resolved only through discussions.

Earlier on Sunday, Sarma said that the main focus is on keeping the spirit of the North-East alive.

The border dispute between Assam and Mizoram turned violent on the 26th of July when gunshots were fired from both sides of the border, resulting in the death of six Assam Police personnel and one civilian. At least 50 people were reported injured in the incident.
