Cachar: Taking the HIV positive tally up, recently five inmates at Silchar Central Jail have tested HIV positive, the informed Jail Superintendent.
Reportedly, two inmates and three under-trial prisoners have tested HIV positive while the remaining are undergoing mandatory testing.
Jail Superintendent Satyendra Baishya said, “Among the two HIV positive inmates one is a truck driver and the other is a resident of Manipur. The convict who hails from Manipur stated that he made unsafe contact with the track driver.”

Further, stating about the three under-trial prisoners, Baishya said, “They were drugs addicts who used to share syringes. Already, two of the three under-trial prisoners have been sent to Silchar Medical College and Hospital.”
Meanwhile, the Joint director of health services of Assam’s Cachar district, Ashutosh Barman, said, “Two of the five inmates were undergoing antiretroviral therapy (ART) treatment at Silchar Medical College and Hospital.”
Adding that the five prisoners who have been tested HIV positive are kept in isolation, Barman asserted, “The health department has an AIDS control body who looks after the health issues of the inmates. The team visits Silchar Central Jail every six months and conducts tests of the inmates.”
Earlier, 88 under-trial prisoners had been tested HIV positive in Nagaon districts, after which the Assam government instructed the concerned authorities to conduct HIV tests of the prisoners.
