Guwahati: Notice given by the Government of Assam on Thursday states that vehicles coming from Mizoram will be checked thoroughly because most of the "illicit drugs" are being transported to Assam via Mizoram through its connecting borders. The order stated that trafficking of illicit drugs via Mizoram causes concern and threat to society. " The vehicles shall be released only after due satisfaction of an officer, not below the rank of Sub Inspector of police that no illicit drugs are carried in the vehicles."
Commissioner and secretary, Home and political department, M S Manivannan in an order stated, “Assam Police have undertaken intensive drive against illicit drugs in the state of Assam and whereas within a short span of two months 912 cases have been registered, 1560 persons arrested and huge quantities of illicit drugs including 20.678 kgs of heroin, 15 kgs of opium and 1.9 kgs of Morphine confiscated.”
The recent crackdown of the drug cartel by CM Himanta Biswa Sarma could be the reason for the border clash between the two states Assam and Mizoram, say sources in the Assam government. According to the sources, patronage in Mizoram has close links with the drug mafias operating from Myanmar across the international border. The flow of drugs, including synthetic drugs from Myanmar are flowed to Mizoram and then to Assam and the rest of the country, sources. Some politicians in Mizoram, with trans-border links, are allegedly involved in this illegal trade, sources said.
“The drugs route originates in Myanmar and travels through Mizoram and Assam’s Barak Valley all the way to Punjab.” “I have strong reasons to suspect that some decisions by the Assam government in the last two months angered non-state elements in Mizoram,” said Himanta Biswa Sarma.
A source in the Assam government told, “The actions taken by Himanta Biswa Sarma government in Assam have upset these Mizo politicians and affected their huge illegal earnings and hence, they have orchestrated the entire border aggression.” The anti-drug campaign launched by the Assam Police has caused serious damage to the drug and betel nut mafia at these Assam-Mizoram border areas. Recently, Assam's crackdown on the drug lords has ‘angered’ the mafias and this aggression is a clear sign that the Mizo mafias are getting rattled, sources in the Assam government said.
