Digital Desk: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday that the state government will introduce a new scheme, 'Nijut Moina,' aimed at providing monthly stipends to girl students to combat early marriage and encourage continued education up to the postgraduate level.
Under the Nijut Moina scheme, girl students enrolling in higher education institutions will receive monthly stipends. "Girl students who join classes 11 and 12 will receive a stipend of Rs 1000 per month. Those entering graduation courses will get Rs 1250 per month, while girls enrolling in postgraduate courses will receive Rs 2500 per month," said the Chief Minister.

That scheme resulted in an increase in the number of girls achieving first division.
The financial implication of the Nijut Moina scheme is substantial. Initially, the scheme is expected to require an annual outflow of approximately Rs 300-350 crore. However, as the number of students benefiting from the scheme increases, the annual expenditure is anticipated to rise to around Rs 1500 crore.
This strategic investment in education highlights the Assam government's commitment to empowering girl students and fostering an environment where they can pursue higher education without financial constraints. The Nijut Moina scheme is seen as a pivotal step towards addressing socio-economic challenges and promoting gender equality in education.
