Digital desk: In light of multiple attacks that the Congress claims occurred during their Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Assam, the state's director general of police (DGP) has issued orders to ensure the Yatra's seamless passage through the region.
Assam DGP Gyanendra Pratap Singh issued the following guidelines in a post on X:
- The organisers are advised to stick to resolutions of the ASL since the Z+ category ASL PP is part of the event.
- Unscheduled stoppages should be avoided.
- The ASL PP may be advised not to leave the vehicle without advance intimation to the local administration and Police.
- Other participants are also advised not to expose the PP through unscheduled stoppages.
- One IGP of Assam Police is supervising the arrangements.
- SP Rank officer along with sufficient force is travelling with the convoy in addition to route deployment.
- The participants of road events are advised not to physically counter localised political protests to the event and leave the same to the deployed and/or accompanying police contingent. We remain committed to providing safe passage to the road event as discussed and decided in the ASL.
Notably, Bhupen Borah, the president of the APCC, was physically attacked on Sunday during the yatra in the Sonitpur area, resulting in severe injuries. It has been stated that when Rahul Gandhi's car went through Jamugurihat in Sonitpur, the APCC leader was attacked. Borah was allegedly attacked by a group of "paid goons" from the BJP, according to the Assam Congress.
Before this, Jairam Ramesh, a prominent member of the Congress, claimed that his car was attacked while on the yatra in Jamugurihat. On social media, he posted a video of the yatra and claimed that guys from the BJP had attacked his car. He also said that it was his "doing" and that Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, was responsible for the tragedy.
Later yesterday, as the yatra arrived in the Nagaon district, more violent events were reported. Vehicles participating in the "Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra" in the Laokhowa region of Nagaon are said to have been destroyed and stones thrown by a number of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers. There have been reports that during Gandhi's rally up to Rupohi in Nagaon, the purported BJP workers could be heard chanting "Jai Shri Ram" and throwing stones at the cars.
