Digital Desk: As Assam braces for a crucial moment in its political landscape, over 81 lakh voters are poised to shape the destiny of 47 candidates contending across 4 Lok Sabha constituencies in the upcoming third phase of polling on May 7.
Official figures released by the Election Commission reveal a staggering total of 81,77,207 voters, including 28,116 service voters. The gender distribution reflects 41,27,099 male voters, 40,84,130 female voters, and 112 third gender voters exercising their democratic rights. To facilitate the electoral process, a network of 9516 polling stations has been established.
The electoral battleground is diverse, with candidates from various political affiliations vying for victory. Kokrajhar, Barpeta, Dhubri, and Guwahati witness 12, 14, 13, and 8 candidates respectively.
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), consisting of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and United People's Party Liberal (UPPL), as well as the Congress, have fielded candidates in all four seats.
The Guwahati constituency garners significant attention with both major parties nominating women candidates and political newcomers. Bijuli Kalita Medhi of the BJP competes against Mira Barthakur Goswami from the Congress.
Key contests include AIUDF Chief Badruddin Ajmal defending his Dhubri seat against Congress stalwart Rockybul Hussain. Additionally, in the Bongaigon seat, a triangular battle is expected between NDA consensus candidate Phani Bhushan Choudhury of the AGP, Deep Bayan of the Congress, and Manoranjan Talukdar of the CPI-M (Marxist).
As Assam prepares to exercise its electoral power, the outcome of these contests will undoubtedly shape the state's political trajectory for years to come.
