Assam-Meghalaya Border Issue: Regional Committees to Submit their Reports before November 30

Guwahati: To solve the long-pending Assam-Meghalaya border issue, the regional committees to submit their reports on or before November 30, said Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his Meghalaya counterpart Conrad Sangma said on Tuesday.

Today, Assam CM and his Meghalaya counterpart Conrad Sangma visited the Langpih village and Kamrup districts at the Assam-Meghalaya border to resolve the inter-state border issue.

Earlier, both the states had constituted three regional committees, each at six of the 12 sites to assess the border situation and asked them to prepare a report within a month.

The six disputed areas taken in the first phase were Gizang, in West Karbi Hills district, Boklapara and Khanapara-Pilingkata in Ri Bhoi district, Tarabari and Ratacherra in East Jaintia Hills district.

Addressing the Media, CM Sarma said, “The regional committees of both the states will submit their reports on or before November 30. The committees from both sides have visited at least five out of the six disputed sites taken in the first phase.”

“Before taking a decision, both the state government will discuss the matter with the stakeholders after receiving the reports on the six disputed sites.” added CM Sarma.

Moreover, CM Sarma confirms that there has been no discussion on altering the border maps between the two states.

On the other hand, Conrad Sangma said, “We are hopeful that we will achieve a mutual solution in this six areas of a dispute after that surely solves the disputes of the remaining six others areas which have a more complicated situation.”
