Digital Desk: As many as two people were killed in police firing, while at least 15 policemen were injured as a massive clash erupted in Assam's Sonapur on Thursday during an eviction drive.

The conflict arose over 200-bigha government land, claimed by local residents as their own, but which the police assert is occupied by illegal encroachers.

The situation deteriorated when police and administrative officials, who were conducting the eviction at Kachutoli, were attacked by a group armed with sticks and other weapons. The encroachers targeted both the officials and their vehicles, leading to a chaotic scene.

In response to the violence, the police fired shots to disperse the crowd. Two individuals who sustained injuries were rushed to Sonapur District Hospital but unfortunately succumbed to their wounds. Despite the initial retreat of the crowd, they soon returned with increased aggression.

Among the injured were a circle officer and a magistrate from Sonapur, along with several police personnel. The intensity of the violence forced the police and administrative officials to flee the scene to avoid further confrontation.

The eviction drive, which has been underway for four days, saw the situation escalate today. A police official at the scene stated, "We attempted to resolve the situation through dialogue, but the crowd was uncooperative and attacked us, injuring 15 to 20 of our personnel. We had no choice but to open fire in self-defense."

The Kamrup Metropolitan District authorities have managed to regain control of the situation, though tensions remain high as the eviction drive continues.
