Guwahati: At the time when around 300 colleges of Assam are facing acute crises of Professors reportedly, around 1200 posts of Assistant Professors are lying vacant in the state.
Notably, Himanta Biswa Sarma, soon after taking charge as the chief minister of Assam, announced that the government would recruit 1 lakh youth in various state government departments.
However, it was notified through a circular dated July 17 that the recruitment process for several posts of Principals and assistant professors in the various government colleges had been kept on hold.

Also, on September 8, State Education Minister Ranoj Pegu informed that the government will fill up 1000 posts in the coming days and that within 7-8 days, the government will fill up 150 vacant posts in the government colleges. But, still, no progress has been reported till now.
In its SOP for reopening colleges, the Assam government mentioned that not more than 30 students could be seated in a class and if necessary, the college authority should allot additional sections. In respect to it, additional sections were allotted but the students faced problems due to a lack of teachers.
The report says that most of the colleges have only 3-4 permanent teachers and every department has a vacancy for atleast two posts. Left out with no option, the contractual teachers have to do classes from 9 am to 4 pm with a salary of just Rs. 5,000 per month.
