Digital Desk: A youth was arrested by the Barpeta district police in Assam for ‘supporting’ the Paresh Baruah-led ULFA-I on social media.
The young person who was detained has been identified as Mahidul Islam (26), also known as Kalo, and he is from Kayakuchi in the Barpeta region of Assam.
Islam was detained for "promoting and supporting ULFA-I" and establishing an "unlawful association" with the insurgent outfit., according to Assam police.
"Long Live ULFA-Independent, Paresh Baruah," wrote Mahidul Islam on Facebook. Joy to Mother Assam, or Joi Aai Axom.
Under section 10(b)/39(2) of the UAPA, a case has been filed in this respect at the Barpeta police station in Assam.
"The recent police encounters in Assam related to ULFA-I are fake."
Leader of the Raijor Dal and MLA Akhil Gogoi made this statement.
Akhil Gogoi said that the recent police encounter at Sadiya in the Tinsukia district of Assam, where three youths were shot at was ‘fake’.
"It is doubtful that there have been any recent police encounters in Assam," Gogoi stated.
He stated, "Police may say anything they want. But the three youths, who were shot at in Sadiya – Biswanth Borgohain, Manoj Borgohain, and Dipjyoti Neog – were contractual workers with the Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB), who lost their jobs.”
"Inebriated, they called their homes and announced their intention to join ULFA-I. The concerned families of the above-mentioned youths then notified the police," he stated.
"The encounter occurred after the young people were taken into custody. Thus, it is evident that the police encounter was fake," Assam Legislative Assembly member Akhil Gogoi stated.
In relation to the grenade blast at Jaisagar, the Assam lawmaker further asserted that there was no truth to the gunfight in Sivasagar, where a young person named Pallab Jyoti Gogoi was shot at and taken into custody.
He also asserted that Pranjal Das's police encounter at Baihata Chariali, Assam, was "fake."
"Manual laborer Pallab Jyoti Gogoi works in Sivasagar. In an attempted confrontation, he was shot. Likewise, during a fictitious confrontation in Baihata Chariali, Pranjal Das was also fired upon. Das' relatives said that he was shot inside the police station," the Assam MLA said.
The ULFA-I, meanwhile, asserted in a statement that the recent police encounters are "fake."
ULFA-I sought evidence from the Assam police department regarding the targeted youths' connections to the rebel group.
