Digital Desk: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has sparked controversy by questioning the authenticity of the Constitution copy carried by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi during a rally in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi on Friday. Taking to Twitter, Sarma alleged that Gandhi's copy had a "red" cover, unlike the original "blue" cover of the Indian Constitution.
"The original copy of the Constitution of India has a blue cover. The original Chinese constitution has a red cover. Does Rahul carry a Chinese Constitution? We will need to verify," Sarma tweeted.
During a joint public rally in Amethi with Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav, Rahul Gandhi prominently displayed a copy of the Constitution, criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi for allegedly undermining constitutional values and citizens' rights. Gandhi accused the BJP-led government of seeking to "erase" the Constitution, a legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, B.R. Ambedkar, and Jawaharlal Nehru.
"The first thing we have to do is protect the Constitution. Why? It is your voice. Your future. Your thought is embedded in it," Gandhi urged the gathering, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the Constitution's principles.
Gandhi's remarks and the display of the Constitution were part of the Congress party's campaign for the INDIA bloc candidate, KL Sharma, in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Lok Sabha elections.
The debate over the Constitution's color has ignited a political discourse, with Sarma's remarks adding fuel to the ongoing electoral narrative. As the political climate heats up, the focus shifts to the core values enshrined in the Constitution and the role they play in shaping India's democratic fabric.
