Guwahati: In the latest development, the Gauhati High Court and session courts on Wednesday granted bail to 14 individuals arrested for posting ‘Pro-Taliban’ posts on social media.
However, the Dhubri session court rejected the bail of two accused identified as Khandakur Nur Alom and Saiyad Ahmed.
Notably, Assam police constable Saidul Haque was the first one to have been granted bail by the Gauhati High Court
Earlier, Assam police arrested 16 individuals including an Assam police constable, a student of Tezpur Medical College, a journalist and a senior leader of the State unit of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, on August 20 and 21, 2021 for posting pro-Taliban posts on Facebook.

The police arrested two people each from Kamrup Metropolitan, Barpeta, Dhubri and Karimganj districts and one person each from Darrang, Cachar, Hailakandi, South Salmara, Goalpara and Hojai. The oldest person arrested was 65 years of age while the youngest was 25.
All the arrested had been booked under UAPA, IT Act and CrPC.
Earlier, in context to the case, Deputy Inspector General Violet Baruah said that Assam Police is taking stern legal action against pro-Taliban comments on social media that are harmful to national security.
