This election is the first after the state's delimitation process, which the opposition criticized for allegedly being biased in favor of the BJP-led government.
Assam, which has 14 Lok Sabha seats, is important because the BJP wants to keep or grow its position after winning nine seats in the 2019 elections. On the other hand, the Congress party is attempting to recapture lost territory in its former stronghold.
Gaurav Gogoi, the Congress deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, is running for the Jorhat seat, which was previously occupied by Topon Gogoi of the BJP.
A list of twelve candidates has been presented by Congress, with one seat reserved for its ally Assam Jatiya Parishad. With TMC fielding candidates in four seats and AAP pulling out of Guwahati, the INDIA coalition is still unformed. The AAP is pressing Congress to do the same in other constituencies.
Results of the vote counting for Assam's 14 Lok Sabha seats are expected on June 4, 2024.
