Digital Desk: As Assam gears up for the second phase of Lok Sabha elections, the State Election Commission has rolled out several initiatives to ensure a seamless and equitable electoral process.
One significant measure involves the closure of the Bhutan Gate near Tamulpur, a vital border point, for three days coinciding with the polling period. This move aims to regulate movement and uphold the Model Code of Conduct.
Furthermore, all political campaigning activities will halt 48 hours before voting commences, starting from 5 pm on April 24. This includes the cessation of meetings, mass gatherings, and cultural events, and the use of mass media for campaigning purposes.
In addition, the sale of alcohol in designated constituencies will be banned from April 24 until the conclusion of polling on April 26, contributing to maintaining decorum and security during this crucial period.
This election marks Assam's first poll following a recent delimitation exercise, resulting in significant changes to electoral boundaries. The BJP aims to expand its Lok Sabha seat count in this context.
Key contenders in the second phase include Pradyut Bordoloi of Congress, BJP's Suresh Bora, and AIUDF’s Aminul Islam in the Nagaon constituency. Meanwhile, Excise Minister Parimal Suklabaidya of BJP will face Congress youth leader Surjya Kanta Sarkar in Silchar.
The commendable voter turnout of 75.95% in the first phase reflects active participation in the democratic process. The declaration of a dry day on June 4, coinciding with the vote-counting day, emphasizes the commitment to maintaining order and integrity throughout the electoral cycle.
These measures underscore the authorities' dedication to conducting free, fair, and peaceful elections in Assam.
