Lumding: A land mafia identified as Nazrul Islam was shot at by Lumding police after he tried to escape from their custody while being taken to the Lumding reserve forest. Nazrul was taken to the reserve forest by the police to track another land mafia associated with him.

It may be mentioned that Nazrul was arrested on November 16 and was in police custody for 3 days.
Earlier, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also mentioned that Nazrul has been involved in a land grabbing act inside the forest. He said, “All the dwellers were brought from various parts of the state by Nazrul and engaged in ginger cultivation.”
On 8 November Assam government, at the directive of the Guwahati High Court, started eviction in the Lumding Reserve forest. The Assam government has evicted the huge encroachment in Dhalpur, Gorukhuti, in September last. Though Dhalpur eviction had turned violent and two people died in police firing, the latest eviction has been ongoing without any untoward incident.
Over 1000 migrant Muslim families were evicted from the Lumding forest, who were brought by land mafia Nazrul and company for turmeric cultivation from 2007 onwards.
