New committee to find solutions for 'Implementation of the Assam Accord'

A new committee on implementing the 'Assam Accord' will find solutions for the considerations of various clauses. The newly formed panel comprises of eight members.

The panel will find solutions on how both the Central and State government could completely implement various clauses of the Assam Accord. This implementation should consider a particular period.

Assam government formed this new sub-committee on October 1, 2021. This fundamental committee will be holding its first conference in Guwahati on October 28, 2021.

Assam minister Atul Bora will head this sub-committee for 'Implementation of the Assam Accord.' Other members of the committee include ministers like Ajanta Neog and Pijush Hazarika. 

It also includes All Assam Students' Union (AASU) president Dipanka Kumar Nath, general secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah, AASU chief advisor Samujjal Bhattacharjya. Advisers of students' organizations, Prakash Chandra Das and Uddip Jyoti Gogoi, will also contribute to the sub-committee. 

AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath stated, "The decision to build this sub-committee was taken in a meeting. The meeting was held between State Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the ASSU on September 7, 2021'. Minister Atul Bora was also present during the meeting on forming the 'implementing Assam Accord' committee.

Nath also said, "Well, the State government can take the required measures to implement some points of the Accord. Throughout the discussions of the sub-committee, the AASU will urge the administrators to implement these subjects within a specific timeframe. On the other hand, only the Union government can implement various points of the Accord. The AASU will urge the Central government to immediately perform a proactive role for the time-bound implementation of those points."

The first meeting of the sub-committee will take place in Guwahati today. The panel members will review all aspects for uniform implementation of the historic 'Assam Accord.' The sub-committee will present its report within three months to the Government of Assam.

The previously formed panel withdrew in protest upon the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill even before their first meeting. IAS officer M.P. Bezbaruah directed the previous committee.

In February 2021, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made a statement on the panel. He said that the suggestions of this panel remains "far from legal reality."
