Guwahati: Police arrested the prime accused in the Assam kidney trafficking case in Tamil Nadu. As per sources, the accused was brought back to Assam. He was held three days ago on the intervening night of Tuesday. A local court has sent him to six days police remand on Wednesday.
The accused, identified as Plaban Borthakur was missing for the last four months. Finally, he was tracked in Coimbatore, a town about 500 km from Tamil Nadu capital Chennai.

Gauhati High Court earlier rejected the bail plea of Borthakur. In July, a major human organ trafficking racket, which preyed on villagers in debt and those struggling financially due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was busted in central Assam's Morigaon district.
Police had consequently held three people. This included a mother and son duo, from Dharamtul village for alleged engagement in the kidney sale racket.
As per sources, some locals alleged to have been lured by the organ traffickers to donate their kidneys for money. Brokers used a hospital in Kolkata for the needed surgical procedures.
The victims claimed that they were deceived as the amount paid was less than the amount promised by the brokers.
