Digital Desk: The ancient mound-burial system of the Ahom dynasty in Assam, known as 'Moidams,' was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List on Friday, marking a historic first for Northeast India. This prestigious recognition was announced during the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee (WHC) currently taking place in India.
The 'Moidams' were nominated by India for the 2023-24 World Heritage cycle. These unique burial sites, dating back to the Tai-Ahom dynasty, are distinguished by their pyramid-like structures and vaulted chambers, known locally as chow-chali. Each 'Moidam' is characterized by a hemispherical mound constructed from layers of bricks and earth, reinforced with a polygonal toe-wall and an arched gateway on the western side.
Assam's Chief Minister celebrated this milestone by sharing it on his X handle, expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, and the people of Assam for their support.
