Guwahati: A woman from Mangaldai faked her pregnancy to protect herself from the disturbances and tortures from her mother-in-law.
The incident came to light when the woman claimed that she had given birth to twins in Mangaldai civil hospital.
To escape her lie, she plotted that her newborn babies went missing from the hospital. Later, police started their investigation upon the missing case stated by woman.
Following the investigation, police brought it to light that the woman was faking her pregnancy. The woman further confessed her story and the reason why she lied. She said to police that the fake pregnancy story was an option for her to protect herself from the tortures of her mother-in-law.

"My mother-in-law frequently warned me that she would not allow me to stay in the house if I could not conceive. Therefore, I pretended of being pregnant and told my husband that I gave birth to a twin baby," she confessed.
As per police sources, the woman managed to fake her pregnant belly with the help of clothes. Police could not find any documents that stated her admission to the hospital.
Especially, the government of India has taken several measures to provide help to women in crisis. Recently, a helpline number has been launched for every woman. SAKHI helpline number is specially launched for providing temporary shelter and help to women in need. It further provides the public interface of 181 WHL (Women Help Line) at the district level.
It can provide organisational, judicial and treatment guidance, besides psychological counselling. SAKHI is under the follow Department of Social Welfare.
