Taking to X, CM Sarma said that China only contributes 30-35% of the Brahmaputra's water flow, mostly though glacier melt and limited Tibetan rainfall.
Digital Desk: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma took to social media to address Pakistan's claim over China's threat to halt the water flow of the Brahmaputra River to India. He shut down the claim and argued that India contributes majority of the river's total flow.
Taking to X, CM Sarma said that China only contributes 30-35% of the Brahmaputra's water flow, mostly though glacier melt and limited Tibetan rainfall.
However, India contributes 65-70% of the water flow, mostly through torrential monsoon rainfall from Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Nagaland, and Meghalaya.
Highlighting India's dominant role in sustaining the river, CM Sarma said the major tributaries of the Brahmaputra River are Subansiri, Lohit, Kameng, Manas, Dhansiri, Jia-Bharali, and Kopili.
CM Sarma's response came after Rana Ihsaan Afzal, an aide to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's controversial comment.
Afzal said that Pakistan can do the same to India similar to India did to Pakistan by suspending water flow of the Indus river.
CM Sarma in his X post added that Brahmaputra is not a river in India that depends on upstream- it is a rain-fed Indian river system, strengthened after entering Indian territory.
He further said that even if China were to reduce water flow, it may help India mitigate the annual floods in Assam, which displace lakhs and destroy livelihoods every year.
