Digital Desk: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) former staff members face financial difficulties because their pension payments remain pending for four months after retirement. Pensioners continue to face uncertainty because repeated attempts to find a solution have not produced any results, leaving pensioner in uncertainty.
A daughter of a retired GMC employee who worked many years for the corporation has revealed that her father remains without pension since last four months . She explained that his accumulated arrears remain unpaid together with additional payments despite making repeated follow-up queries to the system authorities. The retired employees' financial stability has suffered heavily because of delayed pension payments who rely on pensions for daily expenses and medical needs.
A similar incident is being reported by the son of another former GMC employee stating that his family last received a pension payment in October 2024 and after that has not received any payments since then, from November 2024 to February.
Another GMC retiree whose financial state has deteriorated discussed his financial situation. He finds it challenging to maintain his daily living expenses because his pension is discontinued. The employee wondered what grounds the authorities had to withhold essential benefits from those who had faithfully served for many years.
The late payments of pensions cause people to question what the authorities prioritized in this situation. The state chooses to pay MPs and MLAs their benefits promptly yet makes retired employees undergo financial hardships. The grass is not always greener on the other side. The selective method of payment is unfair and unjust to those who have dedicated their lives to public services.
The Supreme Court stated that salary together with pension are “rightful entitlements” which belong to government employees and delay in payment should be compensated with interest . The Central Civil Services (Pension) Rules, 2021 specifies interest payment for late gratuity and pension payments along with family pension as per the rules.
