Digital Desk: Indian star batter and one of the most celebrated cricketers, Virat Kohli, has announced his retirement from Test cricket ahead of India's tour to England for a five-match Test series, starting June 20. His announcement marked the end of an era that spanned 14 years in world cricket.
During the 14 years of his International Test career, Virat Kohli played 123 tests- 68 of them as captain, scoring 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85.
The 36-year-old cricketer scored 30 centuries and 31 fifties in his Test career.
Known for his fitness and aggression inside the field, Kohli has left behind a memorable legacy and phenomenal career in Test cricket.
Taking to Instagram, Kohli posted an emotional message to his fans and well-wishers, announcing his retirement from the longest format of the game.
In his post, Virat said that the 14 years of his Test career tested him, shaped him, and taught him lessons to carry for the rest of his life.
He further said that it was always something deeply personal about playing in whites. The quite grind, the long days, the small moments that no one saw but that stayed with him forever, he added.
He said that announcing retirement from his 'favourite' format of the game was not easy, but it was the right time.
He added, "I've given it everything I had, and it's given me back so much more than I could've hoped for. I'm walking away with a heart full of gratitude- for the game, for the people I shared the field with, and for every single person who made me feel seen along the way."
He concluded saying, "I'll always look back at my Test career with a smile. #269, signing off."
Kohli announced his retirement days after Rohit Sharma stepped away from Test cricket. Fans assumed that both cricketers were left heartbroken after India's difficult outing in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, which led to their decision of retirement from Test cricket.
As per report, Kohli informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) of his retirement.
However, a senior official of the BCCI requested him to reconsider his decision, which Kohli rejected and stood by his decision.
Fans, former players, teammates, and his family poured in tributes for the player after his announcement.
