Digital Desk: India's World Cup 2023 campaign has hit a minor roadblock as star all-rounder Hardik Pandya will be conspicuously absent in the upcoming clash against New Zealand in Dharamsala this Sunday, October 22. This setback came after Pandya sustained an ankle injury during India's recent face-off with Bangladesh, prompting concerns among fans and team management.

The fateful incident occurred in the 9th over of the Bangladesh innings, when Pandya endeavored to block a shot from Litton Das using his right leg. However, misfortune struck as he slipped during the maneuver, leading to an uncomfortable landing on his left leg. In response, the team's physiotherapist swiftly rushed to the field to provide immediate care. Subsequently, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Pandya underwent scans and is presently under medical observation.

In an official statement, the BCCI expressed regret in announcing Pandya's absence from the crucial match against New Zealand. Nevertheless, there remains a glimmer of hope for the all-rounder's return, as he is anticipated to rejoin the squad before India's encounter with England on Sunday, October 29, in Lucknow.

The statement from the BCCI reads, "Team India vice-captain Hardik Pandya sustained an injury to his left ankle while fielding on his own bowling during India's match against Bangladesh at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune. The all-rounder was taken for scans and is advised to rest. He will be under the constant supervision of the BCCI Medical Team. He will not be taking the flight to Dharamsala with the team on October 20 and will now join the team directly in Lucknow, where India play England."

Despite the setback, India has been in sensational form, securing a resounding victory over Bangladesh with a seven-wicket triumph in a thrilling encounter held in Pune. With an impressive track record of four consecutive wins, India presently stands in the second position in the points table, accumulating a commendable total of eight points. Nonetheless, New Zealand leads the pack with a superior net run rate, asserting its dominance in the competition.
