Digital Desk: India's ace pacer, Mohammed Shami, may have emerged as the highest wicket-taker in the recently concluded ICC World Cup 2023, but his journey to this triumph was paved with resilience and overcoming immense obstacles.
In a candid interview with Puma, Shami shared insights into his remarkable cricketing journey, shedding light on the silent battles he fought behind the scenes. Reflecting on the 2015 ICC World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, he revealed the untold story of battling through excruciating pain caused by a knee injury.
"Nobody knew the pain I was dealing with during the 2015 edition," Shami recounted, explaining how he had swelling in his knee before the tournament. Despite the physical distress, his dedication to the country propelled him to persist. He faced a choice: undergo immediate surgery or brave through the tournament and then opt for surgery. Shami's grit and commitment to representing his nation led him to choose the latter.
"After every match, I would go to the hospital to take injections," Shami revealed, highlighting his determination to contribute to the team despite his injury. His unwavering focus on the game, despite personal challenges, underscored his devotion to the national cause.
Following the surgery, Shami faced a daunting rehabilitation phase. The doctor's prognosis was grim, stating that merely walking without a limp would be a monumental achievement, let alone playing cricket again. Shami's sheer determination turned the tide as he embarked on an arduous journey towards recovery.
"When I woke up, I asked the doctor when I could start playing. He replied, ‘It will be a big achievement if you walk without a limp and forget playing,'" Shami recounted, emphasizing the enormity of the challenges he faced.
In a surprising revelation, Shami also shared his unconventional approach to preparing for matches. Unlike many bowlers who inspect the pitch meticulously, he prefers simplicity, believing that understanding the pitch comes from bowling on it. His relaxed demeanor and the absence of pre-match rituals reflect his belief in keeping things uncomplicated to perform at his best.
As Shami stands tall despite India's loss in the ICC World Cup 2023 final, his journey stands as a testament to resilience, fortitude, and an unwavering dedication to the sport and the country.
