Digital Desk: In World Cup 2023, Virat Kohli maintained his amazing run by hitting his seventh fifty-plus score in nine innings. Virat Kohli scored his 71st ODI fifty on Sunday, November 12 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru while displaying his hungry side against the Netherlands.
As Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill tore into the Dutch new ball attack, stitching a 100-run partnership for the opening wicket in only 11.5 overs, it was a show of big-hitting fireworks on Diwali in Bengaluru. But after the Netherlands counterattacked following the first powerplay, India lost Shubman Gill (51), and Rohit Sharma (61), in short succession.
When Shreyas Iyer and Virat Kohli teamed up for the third wicket, the two seasoned batsmen stabilised the ship, preventing another wicket for the Netherlands and creating a bit of panic in the Indian dressing room. During the beginning of his innings, Virat Kohli appeared unstable due to his mistimed delivery. In an unusually strong start to his Bengaluru outing, he appeared to be hitting everything on target.
But it didn't take long for Kohli to settle into his rhythm, as he easily caught up with the balls faced. As Kohli and Shreyas Iyer forged a partnership of nearly 50 runs in the middle overs, the dominating strokes started flowing.
Virat Kohli reached his fifty in fifty-three balls, hitting five fours and a six in that span. Playing sweeps against spinners, something Kohli doesn't do frequently, helped to break the shackles.
In a World Cup edition, Virat Kohli was just 4 runs away from being the third Indian batsman to reach 600 runs. He still has one match, though, as India will take on New Zealand in Mumbai on Wednesday in the opening semi-final.

When Kohli missed a delivery while attempting to play a late cut, the Bengaluru stadium went silent. The fans' disappointment was evident as the star batter lost the chance to break Sachin Tendulkar's all-time ODI record on Diwali.
