Digital Desk: Virat Kohli made his way into the history books yet again after he equalled Sachin Tendulkar's record of 45 ODI centuries with his 73rd international century in India's 67-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first ODI in Guwahati on Tuesday.
After equaling Sachin Tendulkar's record, former India international and Kohli's teammate Gautam Gambhir praised the cricketer and also added that Virat cannot be compared with Sachin as the latter played in a different period when five players were not allowed inside the 30-yard circle.
"You can’t compare Virat with Sachin. In Sachin’s era, there weren’t five players inside the 30-yard circle," Gambhir told Star Sports.
Gambhir also reacted to Sri Lanka's poor bowling in the first ODI, in which India scored 373 runs against the Asian Champions. In a nutshell, the former KKR skipper found the Lankan Lions' bowling performance to be quite disappointing.
"It was pretty ordinary bowling. The top three batsmen for India have a huge number of runs behind them. In addition to Rohit and Kohli, Shubman is also capable of scoring a lot of runs in international cricket. And how simple it was for Shubman and Rohit to score runs today. That caught me off, guard. You have to be constant, and Sri Lanka's bowling performance was very, very disappointing for me," Gambhir said after the first innings.
On being named Player of the Match, Kohli stated that his preparation and intent have always been consistent, regardless of the format.
"I don't believe anything was changed. I never change my preparation or intent; I just keep backing it. As I mentioned during the mid-innings break, it was quite similar to the template I use. I also realized we needed an extra 25-30 runs," he said during the post-match presentation.
