The Board of Management for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided in June 2021 to expand its support for the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). The Summer Olympics are set to take place in Tokyo from July 23 to August 8, 2021. The BCCI has decided to aid Indian athletes in every way it can.
In that spirit, the Apex Council of BCCI has decided to increase help to the Indian Olympic Association and has given a financial gesture of Rs 10 crore in response to a request from the IOA/ MYAS (Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports)," it said in a news release.
The BCCI Apex Council tabled the analysis of its non-cricketing expenses, which included up to Rs 22 crore, during its first post-pandemic body meeting on Thursday.
The Board reported total Olympic expenses of more than Rs 18 crore, including Rs 68 lakh to an event management firm, Rs 4 crore for money rewards for medalists, and Rs 5 crore for the purchase of 'PM Cares' keepsakes for athletes.
Aside from these, the BCCI listed Rs 3.8 crore for sponsoring oxygen concentrators during the pandemic's peak.
This legislation was legally approved at the Apex Council meeting, which was presided over by BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and attended by, among others, Secretary Jay Shah, Treasurer Arun Dhumal, and Joint Secretary Jayesh George.
"It's our responsibility to support various sports. All members approved of this expense, said a BCCI officer who asked to remain anonymous.
The Lodha Committee, appointed by the Supreme Court, established the new Indian board structure, which also instructs the cricket board to support other sports.
During their meeting, the Apex Council also approved increasing the prize money for domestic cricket competitions. Currently, the top domestic cricket match in the country, the Ranji Trophy, awards its victors Rs 2 crore. The brand-new reward money is prepared to be awarded right away.
According to a BCCI official, "The Apex Council has decided to give office-holders discretion to determine on the revised prize money." Following the profit of Rs 48,390 crore from the sale of IPL media rights, the decision was made.
