Digital Desk: Sourav Ganguly, India's legendary captain, turned 50 on Friday (July 8). Dada, as Ganguly is affectionately called, is the current president of India's Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI). He took over the helm in 2019 and, since then, has been working tirelessly for the betterment of Indian cricket.
Before it, he played for India for up to 15 years since his debut against the West Indies in Brisbane in January 1992. Ganguly's career took off in 1996 when he smashed England at the legendary Lord's Cricket Ground. He didn't look back after that.
In the home Test series against Steve Waugh's then-almost-invincible Australia in 2001, he led India to a stunning 2-1 victory. After that, he led India to the 2003 World Cup final, where the Australians defeated the Men in Blue at Johannesburg's Wanderers Stadium.
For some reason, Ganguly was cut from the Indian team, although he later made a comeback. Ganguly, born in Bengal, represented his country for the last time in a Test match against Australia at Nagpur in November 2008.
The Prince of Kolkata scored 7212 and 11363 runs in 113 Tests and 311 ODIs with the help of 38 centuries and 107 half-centuries. Even with the ball, Ganguly wasn't a slob. He collected 132 wickets for India at the highest level, including one four-wicket haul and two five-wicket hauls.
Additionally, Ganguly competed in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He was a member of the now-defunct Pune Warriors before playing for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). India achieved great heights when he was its leader.
