After World Champion Nikhat Zareen confirming her absence, Lovlina not participating in the senior women's championship will be a big blow for the tournament.
Digital Desk: Star Indian boxer and Tokyo Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain will miss the upcoming senior women's national championship, set to be held at the Gautam Buddha University of Greater Noida from March 21-27. Due to the dispute between Boxing Federation of India (BFI) president Ajay Singh and recently suspended BFI secretary general Hemanta Kalita, who also serves as the secretary of the Assam Amateur Boxing Association over the sports body's elections, the female boxers from Assam including Lovlina have been compelled to suffer the consequences.
Ajay Singh on Wednesday made allegations against Hemanta Kalita of intimidating boxers from Assam not to participate in the BFI Nationals.
Despite Lovlina's confirmation of her participation in the 69 kg category earlier, she now confirmed her withdrawal from the event.
Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Singh said, "Assam Boxing state unit and some other state units are not allowing boxers to participate in the nationals. Lovlina recorded a video to support the event but she is not coming now due to Assam not sending a team."
After World Champion Nikhat Zareen confirming her absence, Lovlina not participating in the senior women's championship will be a big blow for the tournament.
Apart from Assam, state associations like Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and West Bengal are not sending their boxers to the tournament. The BFI has confirmed participation of 22 states with many of them on their way to Greater Noida. He also confirmed the participation of other Northeast states except Assam in the senior women's boxing tournament.
