Amazon To Lay Off Over 18,000 Employees

Digital Desk: Amazon stated on
Wednesday that it will lay off more than 18,000 employees, blaming "the
unpredictable economy" and the fact that the online retail giant
"hired swiftly" during the pandemic.

color:#2E2E2E">"We aim to eliminate just over 18,000 roles between the
reductions we made in November and the ones we're disclosing today," CEO
Andy Jassy said in a statement to his employees. In November, the corporation
announced 10,000 layoffs.

that these role eliminations are distressing for people, and we don't take
these decisions lightly.

color:#2E2E2E">"We are working to assist people affected by giving packages
that include a separation payment, transitional health insurance coverage, and
external job placement assistance," he said.

color:#2E2E2E">Some of the job cuts would occur in Europe. Jassey added that
the affected employees would be notified beginning January 18.

color:#2E2E2E">He explained that the abrupt statement was made because
"one of our teammates released this information abroad."

color:#2E2E2E">"Amazon has withstood uncertain and harsh economies in the
past, and we will do so in the future," added Jassy.

color:#2E2E2E">During the pandemic, the store staffed like crazy to match an
increase in demand for deliveries, more than doubling its global workforce
between the beginning of 2020 and the beginning of 2022.

At
the end of September, the company had 1.54 million employees worldwide,
excluding seasonal workers hired during periods of high activity, particularly
around the holiday season.
