Digital Desk: The software company Meta, which owns Instagram, on Wednesday revealed a new program called "Threads", which may directly compete with Elon Musk's Twitter.
The CEO of Meta Platforms Inc., Mark Zuckerberg, reportedly hailed the debut and described "Threads as a new, separate space for real-time updates and public conversations."
Notably, users' Instagram profiles will be connected to threads, making it easier to connect with followers, well-known people or brands. The text posts can only be up to 500 characters long. (In contrast, Twitter only allows 280 characters, up to 10,000 for Twitter Blue users.)

According to Instagram, "all accounts will be private by default, with the main feed consisting of the accounts you follow and suggested content from authors you may not have yet discovered." The Hollywood Reporter states that "threads can be shared via a link or Instagram stories."
Threads will be available in over 100 countries via iOS and Android apps, and new features, including a more effective recommendation engine and search functionality, will be gradually introduced.
"Our vision is that people using compatible apps will be able to follow and interact with people on Threads without having a Threads account, and vice versa, ushering in a new era of diverse and interconnected networks," the company stated in a post.
"Threads is Meta's first app envisioned to be compatible with an open social networking protocol - we hope that by joining this fast-growing ecosystem of interoperable services, Threads will help people find their community, no matter what app they use," The Hollywood Reporter mentioned.
"Threads is where communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today to what'll be trending tomorrow. Whatever it is you're interested in, you can follow and connect directly with your favourite creators and others who love the same things -- or build a loyal following of your own to share your ideas, opinions and creativity with the world," the App Store description stated.
Although there are many Twitter substitutes (including Mastodon, Truth Social, and Bluesky), none of them have been able to duplicate the network effects.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Instagram believes that by integrating its current social networks, Threads will have an advantage over its rivals.
