Digital Desk: Microsoft has announced that Internet Explorer, the company's oldest browser, will be phased out completely on June 15.
In 1995, Internet Explorer was launched as a Windows 95 add-on package. Later, Microsoft began including the app for free as part of the package.
In 2003, the nearly three-decade-old browser reached a peak of 95 per cent usage. However, as other competitors released new browsers with better user interfaces, faster internet speeds, and smoother performance, IE was unable to maintain its position, and its user base began to fall dramatically.
Over time, Internet Explorer has deteriorated into a default browser for installing alternative browsers.
"The future of Internet Explorer on Windows 10 lies in Microsoft Edge," said Sean Lyndersay, Microsoft Edge program manager.
"Microsoft Edge is the future of Internet Explorer on Windows 10," according to Sean Lyndersay, Microsoft Edge programme manager, as stated by Mashable.
"Not only is Microsoft Edge a faster, more secure, and more modern browsing experience than Internet Explorer, but it also solves a critical concern: compatibility with older, legacy websites and applications," Lyndersay added.
"Internet Explorer mode ('IE mode') is embedded into Microsoft Edge, allowing you to view older Internet Explorer-based websites and applications straight from Microsoft Edge," the Microsoft Edge programme manager said.
"Because Microsoft Edge is capable of handling this and other responsibilities, the Internet Explorer 11 desktop application will be retired on June 15, 2022, and support for certain versions of Windows 10 will be phased away," he said.
