14 killed in bar shooting in Johannesburg’s Soweto township

Digital Desk: At least 14 people were killed and three others injured after a mass shooting took place in Johannesburg’s Soweto Township, police said.

Police say they are looking into reports that a gang of guys entered the bar late on Saturday night in a minibus taxi and started shooting at some of the customers. On Sunday morning, police were removing the bodies of the deceased and looking into what had caused the mass shooting.

The one other wounded person and the three critically hurt people have been brought to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.

Lt. Gen. Elias Mawela, the police commissioner for the Gauteng province, claimed that the amount of ammunition discovered at the spot indicated that several people fired shots at the patrons.

Mawela told The Associated Press, "The initial inquiry reveals that these people were enjoying themselves here, in a licensed tavern operating within the legal hours."

People attempted to flee the tavern when they heard several gunshots all of a sudden. The man stated that we don't now have complete information on the motivation for the targeting of these individuals.

"You can tell that a gun of a large calibre was employed, and it was firing at random. You can see that they were all making an effort to leave the tavern", Mawela told The Associated Press.
