Digital Desk: An earthquake of at least magnitude 7.5 rocked Mindanao in the southern Philippines late Saturday, sparking evacuation orders for some places as well as warnings of tsunami waves of one metre (3 feet) or higher.

According to the Philippine Seismology Agency Phivolcs, the waves might impact the Philippines by midnight (1600 GMT) and last for many hours.

According to the US Tsunami Warning System, waves up to 3 metres above tide level could occur along several Philippine coasts.

Meanwhile, tsunami waves of up to a metre are forecast to reach Japan's southern shore roughly 30 minutes later - by 1:30 a.m. on Sunday (1630 GMT on Saturday).

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 7.5 earthquake on Saturday in Mindanao, Philippines. The tremor occurred at a depth of 63 kilometres (39 miles), according to EMSC.

"Boats already at sea during this period should remain offshore in deep waters until further advised," Phivolcs warned, urging residents of Surigao Del Sur and Davao Oriental regions to "immediately evacuate" or "move further inland."
