Brazil to Suspend Indian Vaccine Contract Over Irregularities in the Deal

Rio de Janeiro: The Brazilian government to suspend the deal of Indian Vaccine of 20 million doses of Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin due to irregularities in the deal, the Health Minister said.

As per the report, the deal to buy the Covaxin vaccine has become a headache for Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro after one Health Ministry official alerted the president about the irregularities.

The Ministry said in a statement, “According to the preliminary analysis of the CGU, there are no irregularities in the contract but, for compliance, the Health Ministry chose to suspend the contract for more in-depth analysis.”

Moreover, Brazil’s Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga said that his team would probe the allegations while the suspension was going on at a news conference.

Earlier on Thursday, CNN Brasil reported that the ministry had decided to cancel the contract.

Moreover, Brazilian federal prosecutors have opened an investigation into the deal, citing comparatively high prices, quick talks and pending regulatory approvals as red flags. It is also being probed by a Senate panel investigating the government's handling of the pandemic.
