Islamic State claims accountability for Shia mosque attack in Pakistan

Two terrorists opened fire on police officers near the mosque on Friday, after which one of them went inside and staged the explosives.

Digital Desk: According to media reports on Saturday, the Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for an explosion at a Shia mosque in Peshawar, Pakistan, that killed more than 50 people.

Two terrorists opened fire on police personnel near Shia mosque in Peshawar on Friday, and one of them then entered the structure and staged the explosion. The incident claimed the lives of 57 individuals and injured more than 200 others.

On Friday, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the suicide bombing, saying that "houses of worship should be safe havens, not targets."

"I strongly condemn today's awful attack on a mosque during Friday prayers in Peshawar, Pakistan. My heartfelt condolences go out to those who have lost loved ones, and I stand in solidarity with the Pakistani people. "UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon sent out a tweet.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) denounced the suicide bombing on Friday, saying it was aimed to kill Shia worshippers.

In a statement, the HRCP added, "The assault was designed to target Shia worshippers and bears the hallmarks of sectarian organizations that have been permitted to run uncontrolled in recent years."

The HRCP, in denouncing the Peshawar blast, said it was apparent that the attack was aimed at Shia worshippers and bore the hallmarks of sectarian organizations that have been allowed to run uncontrolled in recent years.
