King Charles III's coronation: King Charles III and Queen Camilla formally crowned
Charles III of the United Kingdom was crowned King on May 6, after a seven-decade wait...

Digital Desk: King Charles III and his wife, Queen Camilla, were both formally crowned Saturday at Westminster Abbey in London. The coronation ritual, rooted in centuries of history but with a few modern-day twists, was taking place in front of some 2,000 guests and a global audience of millions watching on TV or Livestream.

Though Charles technically became king on September 8, 2022, with the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, today's coronation ceremony consecrates and commemorates his ascension.

Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby crowned King Charles.

"King of kings and Lord of lords, bless, we beseech thee, this Crown, and so sanctify thy servant, Charles, upon whose head this day thou dost place it for a sign of royal majesty," the Archbishop said before placing the crown on King Charles' head. Amen."

He exclaimed, "God save the King!" after crowning King Charles.

The Archbishop of Canterbury placed Queen Mary's Crown on the new queen's head and said, "Thy servant Camilla, who wears this crown, be filled by the abundant grace and with all princely virtues; reign in her heart, O King of love, that, being certain of thy protection, she may be crowned with thy gracious favour; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen."

President Joe Biden congratulated King Charles III and Queen Camilla on their coronation on Saturday. Mr. Biden did not travel to London for the coronation, but his first wife Jill Biden was among those in attendance at Westminster Abbey.

The Coronation, according to UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, is a "moment of extraordinary national pride" that will be celebrated throughout the Commonwealth and beyond. "This isn't just a show," Sunak explained. "It's a proud expression of our history, culture, and traditions, a vivid demonstration of our country's modern character, and a treasured ritual that ushers in a new era."
