    Digital Desk: According to the US Geological Survey, a magnitude 5.3 earthquake jolted parts of Mexico on Monday night (USGS). According to the USGS, the epicentre of the earthquake was near the Pacific beach resort of Puerto Escondido in southern Oaxaca state. As a precaution, residents in the capital city evacuated buildings.

    As of now, no significant damage has been reported. Salomon Jara, the governor of Oaxaca, responded quickly to the quake, writing on Twitter that no fatalities had been reported in the state.

    Authorities in nearby Morelos, Puebla, and Mexico City have also ruled out damage.

    Mexico's most recent major earthquake, known as the Michoacan earthquake, occurred in September 1985. This earthquake had a magnitude of 8.0 on the Richter scale and jolted Mexico City, with its epicentre in the state of Michoacan, about 200 miles (320 km) from the capital.

    Mexico City is located in a zone of tectonic tension between the North American Plate and the subducting Cocos Plate.
