Digital Desk: Residents of a small town in Portugal’s Levira, were left stunned after two holding tanks containing around 2.2 million litres of red wine burst, sending red wines into the streets and towards a waterway.
Videos of the incident, which took place in Lourenço de Bairro, a town of 2,000 residents, flowing fermented grape juice through the streets and down a steep hill, have gone viral online.
Due to a mishap in the winery, the area was on the brink of an environmental disaster. Immediately following the mishap, the spill led to an environmental alert.
An environmental warning was also triggered by the huge leak, which could fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool and was going toward a nearby real river. Before spreading over the rest of the town, the wine is also said to have flooded the basement of a house near the distillery.
Before the wine flood turned the Certima River into a river of wine, the fire brigade acted quickly to put a stop to it. According to the New York Post article, the flood was diverted and made to flow into a nearby field.
The strange situation has been apologized for by Levira Distillery and has assured that the town's wine-soaked land has been dredged up. The distillery issued a statement saying, "We bear full responsibility for the expenditures related to cleaning and restoring the damage, having crews do so quickly.”
