Russia-Ukraine Crisis: Netflix suspends services in Russia

Due to Russian invasion in Ukraine, the streamer decided on Sunday "given the circumstances on the ground."

Digital Desk: According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has discontinued functions in Russia due to the nation's escalating invasion of Ukraine.

"We have chosen to discontinue our operations in Russia due to the events on the ground," a Netflix spokeswoman stated on Sunday.

Netflix's decision is part of a cultural backlash that has seen every major Hollywood company put a hold on releasing films in Russia. Disney stated on February 28 that it would withdraw films from the nation, and Warner Bros. followed suit within hours, revealing that The Batman will be pulled at the stroke of midnight.

Sony, Paramount, and Universal too have announced that they will no longer release pictures in the country, including Sony's Morbius, Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Michael Bay's Ambulance (Universal).

Despite a Russian regulation that took effect in early March, Netflix announced on February 28 that it will not broadcast Russian state television networks "given the current scenario."

Netflix even halted production on all forthcoming Russian-language series earlier this week, including a modern retelling of Anna Karenina — the streaming service's first original Russian series — and Zato, a neo-noir detective drama. According to reports, the streamer has fewer than 1 million members in Russia, out of 222 million worldwide.

Major social media platforms have also ceased or been blocked in Russia due to a Russian regulation regulating "false news." For instance, TikTok announced that it was banning new uploads and live-streaming in Russia while investigating the newly enacted law's "safety implications".

In retaliation for Facebook's limitations on state-owned news organizations like Russia Today and Sputnik in the European Union, Russia's communications agency restricted access to the network earlier this week.

Moreover, the Ukrainian Film Academy has decided to boycott Russian films, while the Cannes Film Festival has declared its support for Ukraine. As a result of the issue, upcoming concerts by Green Day and Louis Tomlinson have been cancelled.
