Attacks on minorities in India took place throughout 2021: US govt report

The report mentioned discrimination against minorities in India, extrajudicial killings, degrading treatment or punishment by the police and prison officials

Digital Desk: The US Department of State's Report on International Religious Freedom for 2021, which was released on Thursday, alleged that attacks on minorities in India, including killings, assaults, and intimidation, occurred throughout the year.

In several Indian states, the report identified several incidences of violence against minorities, including cow vigilantism, attacks on religious places and properties owned by Muslims, and anti-conversion laws.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken addressed the "increasing attacks on people and places of worship" in India when releasing the report.

Some Indian officials, according to Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom Rashad Hussain, are "ignoring or even condoning escalating attacks on people and places of worship."

Attacks on minorities included vigilantism against non-Hindus based on charges of cow slaughter or selling or possessing beef, according to the report's section on India.

According to the research, eleven of the country's 28 states have laws prohibiting religious conversions.

"Four state governments have laws against so-called forced religious conversions for the purpose of marriage," it said, adding that "some state high courts have dismissed cases prosecuted under this law."

A 14-year-old Christian boy from Bihar's Gaya district died on September 26 after some people allegedly splashed acid on him, according to the report.

The report also mentioned two Muslim men in Jamshedpur who said that during an interrogation on August 26, the police forced them to strip naked and beat them up.

According to a media report, by the end of the year, no action had been taken against the accused police personnel.

According to the State Department, suspected militants killed citizens from the Hindu and Sikh minorities in Jammu and Kashmir, causing "widespread panic" among the groups.

It took note of reports that Muslim-owned assets, such as mosques, stores, and homes, had been vandalized by Hindu nationalists.

Hate speech against minorities was included in the study, notably during a conclave in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, in December, where Hindu supermacist seer Yati Narsinghanand exhorted Hindus to take up arms against Muslims.

It also mentioned a comment made on October 15 by Muslim preacher Abbas Siddiqui, who called for the death of people who insulted the Quran.

According to the US Department of State, Muslims in India are exposed to communal violence and prejudice. In its "2021 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices," the State Department made the statement in the chapter on India.

It may be mentioned that the report mentioned discrimination against minorities in India, extrajudicial killings, degrading treatment or punishment by the police and prison officials, and arbitrary arrests and detentions by government authorities, among other concerns.
